Gnomevember 2021 day 27

Today’s prompt being “Queens and Orphans,” so here’s the Gnomish queen-to-be of “Tock the Gnome,” Princess Bartelbia, encountering someone of a much lower and needier class than her usual company!

Bartelbia is a very sheltered character – she’s lived most of her life in the palace, her movements very, very controlled – and I’m not sure if we’ll get to see her in the comic proper. But I feel like there’s a story here, at very least. There aren’t many orphans in Gnomish culture, currently, but those that exist are taken in by temples of Shipley (the god of animals and families) and cared for as well as possible. In order for this encounter to happen, the Princess would have had to sneak out of the palace, out the noble and wealthy class areas and into the lower and poor sections of the city, maybe finally curious to see what life is really like for her people!

So maybe this is happening right now – while Tock is away, perhaps one day Queen Adamine is busy with her work, leaving an opening for Bartelbia to choose how she spends her time, for once. Perhaps something she’s read recently, or something she overheard the councilors saying when they thought she wasn’t listening, inspires her to be curious and bold. Perhaps she commandeers a carriage and a driver, using her status to swear them to secrecy, and she sneaks away and out the dividing sections of the castle grounds – into the wealthy sections, past the public gardens and into the working class areas. Perhaps she steps out of the carriage, not minding that she’s still in full finery, not disguised at all. Perhaps she wanders past the shops and the airship docks and finds herself at a nearby temple, drawn there for comfort since her late father was a priest before he married her mother. And perhaps, finally, she really sees.

And though this young Gnome is close to destitute, especially by comparison, there is a fair amount of worship of the royal family in Gnomish culture, so to suddenly see the Princess – even more, to be able to reach out and touch her! – would be a wonder for them indeed. And that simple fact would, of course, have an impact on the Princess all on its own.

Gnomevember 2021 day 26

Today’s prompt being “Duel!”

Duels absolutely happen between the Gnomes of “Tock the Gnome” but are uncommon, held as a last resort in emotionally-charged conflicts. Most Gnomes tend to settle things logically and practically, and dueling is technically illegal. The Crown highly discourages them and in the noble/wealthy class, any dueling parties who are caught are always arrested. For the most part in the lower class areas, local law enforcement turns a blind eye to such matters – preferring to let such disputes resolve themselves instead of getting their own hands dirty, when they do (again, infrequently) occur.

I imagine these two are relatives, arguing over who’s going to have control over certain parts of their family’s situation, after an older relative has passed – all formal-meetings and lawyered-paperwork attempts at resolution having failed.

Gnomevember 2021 day 20

Today’s prompt being “Amulet.”

The Gnomes of “Tock the Gnome” don’t invest faith in magic as a rule – they know it technically exists in the world within other people, but they don’t have it, and most of their teachings describe it as a nuisance with unpredictable consequences. Impractical, and such a bother. So any heirloom jewelry they have wouldn’t be directly magical.

BUT.

There IS power in the warmth there, in remembering a loved one fondly who passed something down to you!

So in this case, though this Gnome woman isn’t getting any Grand Special Abilities from her pendant – inherited from her grandmother, who was a priestess of Carwen – there is still, at least, a circumstance bonus inherent in that love.

Gnomevember 2021 day 18

Today’s prompt being “Wealth/Carrying.”

Which got me thinking about leisure moments.

Which got me thinking about how a) such moments, how many of them one gets, would be a measure of wealth indeed for the Gnomes of “Tock the Gnome.”

And b) to have a small book like this, a novel, would not only be dangerous (since recording non-practical information in current Gnomish culture is a big no-no) but also a great symbol of wealth in itself.

(Not that one could flaunt it openly. But still.)

As for “Carrying,” I believe wholeheartedly that Story – tales – carry us ALL through challenging circumstances. So I hope this speaks to that, and I hope you think of your favorite story and send it some love today!

Gnomevember 2021 day 16

Today’s prompt being “Wedding,” which means we have some more world building for “Tock the Gnome!” I’ve gone into what Gnomish weddings are like before, but haven’t detailed out what the actual wedding ceremony itself is like.

So.

Every Gnomish wedding ceremony is presided over by a priest/ess of Carwen (Gnomish goddess of Love and creation) at either one of her temples or one of her shrines, but tailored to fit each couple’s individual needs.

Only 3 things have to happen in order

  • Petition to Carwen to bless the union and keep Love first and foremost between the couple, no matter what circumstances they’re facing – they face all blessings and challenges together, now. This is worded however the priest/ess sees fit.
  • Then that agreement is symbolized/manifested however the couple likes (anything from flowery vows, spoken or in song if the couple is feeling very creative – or even dancing together or an exchange of other creative works if that’s more their style – to just a simple “I do”).
  • Then an exchange of rings to seal that agreement, usually followed with their first kiss as spouses (though that can be omitted if the couple is shy).

Otherwise, the format is individual to each couple. Some bring their whole families and all their acquaintances (especially the upper class, since its taken as a chance to show off, in more than one way), while some, especially in the working and lower classes, have only a few witnesses to the ceremony itself. Interestingly, both the surface Gnomes and the upper class (who would look on the surface Gnomes as the poorest of the poor, since they don’t even live in the cities) have the commonality of very large weddings, inviting pretty much everyone they know/everyone in their community to the ceremony as well as the party after.

Some ceremonies include music and moments for people close to the couple to recall memories of their courtship, or wish specific blessings upon them. Some go right into the feasting and dancing from the ceremony, some take a break for everyone to rest or change clothes before the partying starts.

It should also be noted that though the feasting and Wedding Rounds are essential to Gnomish weddings, culturally, they are not necessary for a marriage to be legally binding. Only the 3 parts of the ceremony noted above technically have to happen for a couple to be legally recognized. So if a couple chose to marry quickly (like Bumble’s brother Ruggels and brother-in-law Alecs did, for example), their marriage would still be considered as true as the Queen’s.

For most, though, all traditions are observed as an opportunity to celebrate their love and gather all their loved one in the process, taking a whole day for that joy in the face of lives that are often challenging, one way or another.

Gnomevember 2021 day 10

Today’s prompt being “The Tooth Gnome/Partners.” So, a tooth-faerie sprite has enlisted some Gnomish assistance in their work. …..Looks like it’s going well, yeah?

This would also normally be World Building Wednesday for “Tock the Gnome,” but as I mentioned to my patrons, I’ve suspended/elevated world building posts for the month – there’s a LOT of world building opportunities in these prompts, so instead of just having one day per week set aside for that, I’ll be scattering world building notes throughout the entire month instead!

And on that note, this exact partnership is technically possible in that realm (thus the use of the same kind of sprite I draw in the comic) BUT not exactly likely. The beings of that realm do not have the same tooth rituals we humans do. It is, however, possible for one of these sprites – who are closer in substance to the primordial energy of all Faerie – to enlist the help of a more embodied faerie being if they need it. This happens rarely, since they themselves are able to take physical form if they need to. If it does come to this, the being approached would need to consent to the work, and then is magicked to forget it once the work is over.

Not sure yet if this has happened before in any way that impacts the main plot or the characters. We shall see πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈπŸ’•

Gnomevember 2021 day 8

Today’s prompt being “Soldier!” So, Tock’s grandfather, who served in the Gnomish military during Arella’s daughter Feodora’s reign. That cone he’s holding under his left arm is the Gnomish helmet, the cap on his head is their non-combat uniform. And yes, we’ve seen that coat before.

Her father’s family, including this strapping gentleman, are inventors – so, on a world building note, his having been in the military means that the Gnomes do conscript their citizens into soldierhood as the Crown deems necessary. It is assumed and accepted that this has always been the case, but the royal archives only have record of such conscriptions from Queen Arella’s time onward. Hmmmm….

Gnomevember 2021 day 7 (Sunday Gnomedays)

“Dreams unwind, love’s a state of mind” – Fleetwood Mac, “Rhiannon”

Today’s prompt being “Priest/Casual Wear,” we have something a bit AU for “Tock the Gnome” – Tock herself as a priestess of the Gnomish goddess Carwen, lady of Love and Creation. She’s wearing a variation of one of the clergy’s garments that I’ve drawn before. And as for casualness – Carwen, being the most open and free of the Gnomish pantheon, has followers who wear the most comfortable clothes!

(And of course, couldn’t resist drawing Onna with her!) πŸ’—

On that note, taking the opportunity for some world building goodness – Carwen’s clergy are among the only of the Gnomish pantheon that are encouraged to live as they please outside of their worship and preaching – having few official temples, they don’t really have an organized structure that can demand that they live together within a Temple Proper, so most priests of Carwen live in family homes with their spouses or relatives. Marriage is encouraged, absolutely, but not a requirement – should someone be aromantic, or polyamorous, they are as welcome to enter her service as anyone who falls in line with more mainstream Gnomish social assumptions about romance.

You can see Carwen in the comic here, and more on her worship is available here!
