Art show January 2019 – “Gnomes are Faeries too!”

As previously mentioned and advertised

“Gnomes are Faeries too!” by Rachel Terwilliger

A showcase of Gnomish Faerie exploration by local fantasy/Faerie comic artist & illustrator Rachel Terwilliger (@rachelillustrates on Instagram, Facebook and deviantArt).

Very often the mainstream representation of faerie folk shows us only small, winged creatures who focus on flower care and the kinder aspects of the unseen. While these are valid as any, most other aspects of Faerie are treated as separate from that magical nature – including Gnomes! This work seeks to recognize that nature in these woodland folk and inspire others to do the same.

Featuring Gnomes of several Faerie realms, including Rachel’s steampunk/fantasy graphic novel called “Tock the Gnome” (readable in-progress at tockthegnome.com). Her other recent projects include design work for The Cherry Arts’ “The Snow Queen” 2016-2018 and a series of book covers for H.M. Barone’s “The Zoey Jane Files.” Prints of her work and original pieces are for sale at rachelillustrates.etsy.com.

That said, the reception was this past Friday evening, and it was lovely!

Many thanks to the Hilton Garden Inn Ithaca NY for hosting me, and to everyone who stopped by! I hope you all enjoyed seeing Faerie through my eyes and heart. Getting to do a show focused entirely on Gnomes feels very special to me, and I certainly hope that you all find inspiration in it – to look closer, to try and see the hidden world that’s all around us.

To believe 🙂

The work itself was very fun to put together (and brought to my awareness how very Gnomish my work is in general, I would say 80%, haha). Narrowing down which pieces to newly include was an interesting challenge, too – several Gnomevember pieces from this year and last year got to be featured, and paired with Gnome Wings that matched best thematically (and color-wise). That presentation – putting them together encircled with pebbles – was a new, very faerie-inspired thought, and I am very glad for it.

I hung the show very low again, as I did the first time I showed in this space – part of that is because I myself am so short and my work is so small, but I also hope it helps taller folk to think to look lower – to see what’s below, those small magics hidden closer to the earth. Like Gnomes themselves!

The glass case, of course, is an exception to this idea, as is the wall featuring my Gnomish Persephone, but that couldn’t be helped. Though, as She demanded a wall to Herself, I figure it can’t hurt to have Her raised higher!  And I do like that you can see up through the layers inside the case, thanks to the glass shelving – maybe that will help people think of things in a Gnome’s-eye-view perspective? 😀

I haven’t had a gallery show since last March, so it feels very, very nice to be featured like this again. If you’re in the Ithaca area, please come through and take a look! The walls will be graced with my Gnomish work until the end of this month.

Sabbat Sketches – Mabon (Persephone)

IMG_20180922_183259_152.jpg

Blessed Mabon everyone 🍂

In my practice, this is when Persephone heads back to the Underworld – not fully in Her power as Queen there, yet, but beginning Her descent and Her reunion with Hades.

Life is a part of Her, the rebirth and the green, but so is the harvest and the falling leaves. The oncoming cold and the care of lost, broken souls. She must miss that part of Herself.

May Her reclaiming of that role be smooth and welcome, may Her Bountiful Mother let Her go with acceptance, if not understanding.

And may Their love be strong as ever, and be our reminder to take care of each other.

Sabbat Sketches – Beltane (Persephone)

sabbat_sketches___beltane__persephone__by_rachelillustrates-dcag0o2

Blessed (slightly belated) Beltane, everyone!

Welcome Spring, and blessed be it’s Queen, who loves us SO much that she leaves her own beloved for months in order to give us flowers and sunshine and green.

(I was really struck about that while I was drawing this – yes, Spring is Her domain as it was before She married Hades, but Her Love for us is palpable to me. Surely She misses Him – and on this day of marriage of Lady and Lord, I had to show Him up looking up at Her, too – but Her devotion to us, in return to OUR devotion, felt so very strong and true as I was drawing this. Aaaaaaand it came out MUCH more impressive than I expected! So it gets a proper scan.)

Sabbat Sketches – Imbolc (Persephone)

sabbatsketches2018_persephone_imbolc

Almost late, but Blessed Imbolc everyone 🌱🍃🌹

I wanted a break from doing fae-cultural specific Sabbat Sketches, so this year we’ll be focusing on Queen Persephone (who I’ve been blessedly drawn to lately) and Her cycle through the seasons with Her husband Hades and Her mother Demeter! I feel like it’s going to be a challenge, but I am quite excited and very pleased with this first drawing.

As for their cycle together, I believe right now that the King and Queen of the Underworld are enjoying one last sabbat together below, before Persephone returns to the world above, when spring fully blooms. 💗
