Art show January 2019 – “Gnomes are Faeries too!”

As previously mentioned and advertised

“Gnomes are Faeries too!” by Rachel Terwilliger

A showcase of Gnomish Faerie exploration by local fantasy/Faerie comic artist & illustrator Rachel Terwilliger (@rachelillustrates on Instagram, Facebook and deviantArt).

Very often the mainstream representation of faerie folk shows us only small, winged creatures who focus on flower care and the kinder aspects of the unseen. While these are valid as any, most other aspects of Faerie are treated as separate from that magical nature – including Gnomes! This work seeks to recognize that nature in these woodland folk and inspire others to do the same.

Featuring Gnomes of several Faerie realms, including Rachel’s steampunk/fantasy graphic novel called “Tock the Gnome” (readable in-progress at tockthegnome.com). Her other recent projects include design work for The Cherry Arts’ “The Snow Queen” 2016-2018 and a series of book covers for H.M. Barone’s “The Zoey Jane Files.” Prints of her work and original pieces are for sale at rachelillustrates.etsy.com.

That said, the reception was this past Friday evening, and it was lovely!

Many thanks to the Hilton Garden Inn Ithaca NY for hosting me, and to everyone who stopped by! I hope you all enjoyed seeing Faerie through my eyes and heart. Getting to do a show focused entirely on Gnomes feels very special to me, and I certainly hope that you all find inspiration in it – to look closer, to try and see the hidden world that’s all around us.

To believe 🙂

The work itself was very fun to put together (and brought to my awareness how very Gnomish my work is in general, I would say 80%, haha). Narrowing down which pieces to newly include was an interesting challenge, too – several Gnomevember pieces from this year and last year got to be featured, and paired with Gnome Wings that matched best thematically (and color-wise). That presentation – putting them together encircled with pebbles – was a new, very faerie-inspired thought, and I am very glad for it.

I hung the show very low again, as I did the first time I showed in this space – part of that is because I myself am so short and my work is so small, but I also hope it helps taller folk to think to look lower – to see what’s below, those small magics hidden closer to the earth. Like Gnomes themselves!

The glass case, of course, is an exception to this idea, as is the wall featuring my Gnomish Persephone, but that couldn’t be helped. Though, as She demanded a wall to Herself, I figure it can’t hurt to have Her raised higher!  And I do like that you can see up through the layers inside the case, thanks to the glass shelving – maybe that will help people think of things in a Gnome’s-eye-view perspective? 😀

I haven’t had a gallery show since last March, so it feels very, very nice to be featured like this again. If you’re in the Ithaca area, please come through and take a look! The walls will be graced with my Gnomish work until the end of this month.

Orctober 2018 day 1, with Prompt List <3

IMG_20181002_162838_945.jpg

Coming to the party a little late, and honestly wasn’t planning on it, buuuuuuuuuut someone asked me for a link to a prompt list. And here we are.

I am aware, also, that my handwriting is terrrrrrible, so here is a more legible list:

  1. Strong
  2. Flower
  3. Rain
  4. Laugh
  5. Rush
  6. 6 Song
  7. Fight
  8. Friend
  9. Tusk
  10. Move
  11. Look
  12. Message
  13. Steed
  14. Leader
  15. Capture
  16. Oath
  17. Stars
  18. Pride
  19. Cairn
  20. Swim
  21. Faerie
  22. Family
  23. Wound
  24. Wise
  25. Love
  26. History
  27. Fire
  28. Breath
  29. Skull
  30. Rest
  31. Magic

The drawing on the left is, of course, my entry for day 1 – Strong. For some reason it made me think of how Orcish strength comes often from community, and how strength itself can be a quiet, interior thing.

Also, in case it wasn’t clear from the style of the Orcish lady above and all behind her – I will indeed be focusing on “Tock the Gnome” style Orcs for this challenge. As such, all future Orctober drawings will be posted over there.

And lastly, please feel free to use this list yourself! Tag me too, if you don’t mind – @rachelillustrates or #rachelillustrates .

Happy Orctober everyone!!!

WIP and coloring page – “It Works”

wip_itworks_inkwork_info_by_rachelillustrates-dcbp4a5

This is demanding finishing up regardless of anything/everything else I have going on.

Aaaaaaand since the linework is so pretty, I figured I’d make a coloring page out of it! Please enjoy and tag me ( @rachelillustrates or #rachelillustrates ) if you use it ❤

Also, in addition to being OBSESSED with these two now (I’m fine. Don’t send help) I highly suggest “Celestial Bodies” by AnontheNullifier if you’re in need of a less catastrophic AU of their development. It’s delicious and perfect.

Shot of the pencilwork here.
